Chapter 9

After sitting in her car outside the hospital for over a half-hour, Hayden had mustered up enough courage to venture to the front door. She paced back and forth in front of the automatic door. The door’s irritated whirl as it opened and shut with each passing was the only thing Hayden could hear. Everything else in the world seemed to fade away.

Fade away, but definitely didn’t disappear. All the thoughts she had of more bloodwork, more tests, and more bad news still lingered at the forefront of her mind. She’d wished she had taken Molly up on her offer to go with her. But Hayden was stubborn and wanted to go alone. There was no need for Molly to hear all the bad stuff. Hayden wanted to protect her from that for as long as she could.

Hayden walked through the open door and straight up to the front desk before she could talk herself out of it.

“Hello, my name is Hayden Forrester and Vera—er, um—Dr. Mackenzie told me to stop by sometime to talk to her. So, I’m stopping by. To talk to her. Dr. Mackenzie. I need to talk to Dr. Mackenzie.”

She forced herself to take a breath as the receptionist picked up the phone and dialed a number. Hayden nervously tapped her fingers on the counter as she waited.

“Do you know where her office is?”

“Um, no.”

“Take the elevator to the fourth floor. It’s the third door on the left.”

“Great. Thanks.”

Hayden made a beeline for the elevators and rapidly pressed the up button numerous times until the door dinged and opened. She pressed the fourth-floor button equally as quickly as the doors slowly closed. Her heart was beating in her ears as the elevator made its descent, that felt much slower than Hayden remembered an elevator being. When the door dinged open again, Hayden stood frozen in place. Her feet were concrete blocks and there was no way she could move them.

As the doors started to close again, Hayden bolted out of the elevator as if it were on fire.

Come on, dude. Get yourself together. You already know the bad news.

She found the door to Vera’s office and noticed it was slightly ajar. Hayden knocked softly, unsure if she should just walk into the office or not.

“Come on in, Hayden.”

Hayden did and closed the door behind her. Vera’s office walls were covered in framed degrees and family photos. Innumerable plants of various shapes and sizes lined the large window frame behind the solid oak desk. Vera was typing away at her computer with a concentrated look on her face, so Hayden slowly sat down in the chair across from her. She had her short blonde hair pulled back into a messy clip and wore a white coat over her blue scrubs.

“Sorry about that,” Vera apologized as she turned away from her computer to focus on Hayden. “I had to get that email sent, or I knew I would forget it.”

“No problem.”

Vera inhaled sharply and rummaged on her desk for a notepad and pen.
